Waukesha woman charged with attempted murder after 'random acts of violence' near Gurnee Mills Mall

GURNEE, Ill. (CBS 58) -- Gurnee police say the Waukesha woman involved in a series of random acts of violence Monday, Feb. 2, is now facing criminal charges in Illinois. 

Twenty-five-year-old Katelyn Harmon faces the following charges: 

  • Attempted first degree murder (two counts)
  • Leaving the scene of a crash involving personal injury (two counts)
  • Aggravated battery causing great bodily harm (two counts)
  • Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon (three counts)

Harmon is accused of striking a 79-year-old man with a car in the Gurnee Mills Mall parking lot, then hitting a 60-year-old woman.

Later, officials say Harmon went to a different parking lot and approached a 30-year-old man in his car with a butcher knife, slashing one of his tires. A struggle began between the two, resulting in cuts to the man's hands, before her arrest. 

Authorities say the 79-year-old victim remains hospitalized in critical condition.

The 60-year-old woman and 30-year-old man were treated and released. 

Police say no clear motive has been identified, and the there is no known connections between Harmon and the victims. 

She is expected to appear in Lake County court Feb. 4.
