Waukesha woman accused of hitting 2 with car in Gurnee Mills parking lot during 'random acts of violence'

GURNEE, Ill. (CBS 58) -- Police say a Waukesha woman was taken into custody Monday, after what they say appear to be random acts of violence in Gurnee, Illinois.

Officers responded to a parking lot at Gurnee Mills Mall shortly after 10 a.m. after reports of a driver striking a pedestrian. According to the initial investigation, the driver hit a 79-year-old man standing near his vehicle, seriously injuring him, before striking a 60-year-old woman who suffered non-fatal injuries, and fleeing the scene.

Police say both victims were taken to area hospitals for treatment.

While searching for the vehicle involved, a Gurnee officer witnessed a man and woman fighting near Grand Avenue and N. Hunt Club Road. After ordering them to separate, police say the woman "aggressively" approached the officer, who arrested her after deploying a taser.

Authorities say the suspect - a 25-year-old Waukesha woman - was determined to be the driver involved in the earlier pedestrian crash.

They say after fleeing the parking lot earlier in the day, the woman entered another lot in the area and approached a man sitting inside his vehicle. Officials say the woman used a large butcher knife to strike the man's window and slash his driver's side tire. When the victim got out of his car, police say a struggle began between the two, resulting in several cuts to the man's hands -- he was able to disarm the suspect and restrain her until law enforcement arrived.

Gurnee police say there is no ongoing threat to the public. An investigation remains ongoing, with charges pending.
