'Smells like a dead mouse:' Penelope the Corpse Flower blooms at Milwaukee Park Domes
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A dead mouse. Trash. Dirty diapers. Rotting flesh.
Not typically a scent anyone wants to smell.
But for the hundreds waiting in line Saturday morning at the Mitchell Park Domes, that was all everyone wanted to experience.
Meet Penelope.
She's the resident corpse flower for the Domes, and while most bloom once every seven to 10 years, she bloomed two years ago, making this an even rarer occurrence.
"Truly something that most people would never get to see in their life," said Christa Beall Diefenbach, the CEO for the Milwaukee Domes Alliance. "It looks like it's from out of this world."
The corpse flower gets its name from its scent.
"That is because its preferred pollinator is a type of fly that likes stinky things, so it actually adapted to create that scent, so it was more efficient at attracting its pollinator," Beall Diefenbach told CBS 58's Ellie Nakamoto-White.
For Maria Gorecki, who is visiting from Indonesia, seeing the flower in person is a dream come true.
"It is easier to find the corpse flower here than in Indonesia, because in Indonesia, we have to go to the forest," Gorecki said. "Now I get to see it and I'm so happy and grateful, thank you Milwaukee!"
When the flower blooms, its scent only lasts about 12 to 24 hours, so officials recommend visiting as soon as possible before it dissipates fully this weekend.
