Federal funding pulled for Milwaukee's 6th Street reconstruction project

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A plan to reconstruct and revitalize a 2.6-mile stretch of 6th Street in Milwaukee is now in limbo.

Congress is cutting the $34 million of federal funding that was supposed to pay for the project, as part of the tax cut and spending bill.

The plan had several key points, all of which aimed to improve safety for pedestrians and bikers while making the area more welcoming for the people who live there.

Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson released the following statement Monday:

As of right now, it's not clear if the city is looking for new funding options to keep the project going.
