Bodycam captures fatal police-involved shooting near 84th and Kaul
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Milwaukee Police Department on Monday, June 29, released body camera footage from a police-involved shooting that left a 22-year-old man dead.
The incident happened on June 12, near 84th and Kaul.
Milwaukee police say just before 11 a.m., officers responded to a call about a man with a gun threatening to shoot the caller near 84th and W. Kaul Avenue. Officers learned the man was trying to rob the caller. When police arrived, they saw the suspect walking away from the scene and attempted to stop him.
On one of the videos, an officer tells Brown, "I don't want to shoot you." Brown said, "I don't want to talk." The officer replied, "Ok, but I want to talk. Come on. Why can't we talk? Talking is way better than shooting, any time."
The 22-year-old suspect -- identified as Jaylyn J. Brown -- can be seen on body camera footage holding a gun to his head and threatening to shoot officers. Brown can then be seen entering an apartment building as officers shout for him to stop.
Brown retreated to a hallway on the second floor, when officers heard a gun discharge.
Police made entry to the apartment building and repeatedly ordered Brown to drop the revolver; one officer discharged their firearm at Brown. No one was struck by gunfire at this time, according to police.
At least twice, Brown told officers, "Shoot me!"
An officer said, "Drop the gun, man! We don't want anyone to get hurt! Drop the gun!"
Officers reportedly negotiated with Brown for approximately one hour, and at one point, he agreed to accept a bottle of water and a cigar from police.
Brown walked down the stairs, according to police, to retrieve the water and cigar.
Officers let loose a police dog and used "less lethal options" like shooting bean bags and using a taser. But Brown retreated back upstairs.
At the same time, two other officers were upstairs in an apartment unit, just on the other side of the door from Brown.
When shots were fired in the hallway, they opened the door. They ordered him to show his hands, saying, "Show us your [expletive] hands!" Brown said, "I can't move."
Brown's mother, D'Lynn, spoke with us days after the shooting. She said, "And then [the officer] said, 'Drop the gun!' My son said, 'I can’t move.'"
Brown was transported to a hospital where he died.
D'Lynn Brown says her family has an attorney and intends to take legal action. But so far, it's unclear when they plan to file a suit.
The officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative duty as is routine in a critical incident.
