State releases $17 million to MPS after financial reporting progress

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced the release of $17 million in funding to Milwaukee Public Schools on Tuesday, Aug. 26 after the district met requirements for financial reporting.

The funds are tied to the 2023-24 fiscal year and support students with special needs and students who are raising children. Last week, the department released $16 million in 2022-23 aid for the same programs.

Officials note in a Tuesday press release that the distribution of funding reflects state approval of MPS’s plan to align its financial reporting with state systems. A final $8 million is expected once the district’s external audit is submitted.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jill Underly said regarding MPS Superintendent Brenda Cassellius, "I’m grateful for Dr. Cassellius’s leadership, the dedication of MPS staff, and the hard work of our team at the DPI as we continue working to ensure students and families in Milwaukee have the resources and opportunities they need and deserve."

Cassellius is quoted as adding, "“We are committed to fulfilling our obligations, modernizing our systems and rebuilding the public’s trust."
