Push to end violence in Milwaukee continues after deadly Water Street shooting
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - An 18-year-old has been charged in connection to a deadly shooting on Water Street on March 22.
The shooting resulted in the death of 22-year-old Dylan Jackson.
“I feel like I’ve just woken up so many mornings to the news of hearing so much violence,” Jordan Dahlberg said.
Dahlberg lives off Water Street and tries to stay cautious around the area at night.
“Make sure you uber and be ultra safe of your surroundings.” Dahlberg said. “It just makes you anxious, and you never want to think about the worst-case scenario.”
Across town in Walker’s Point, LIT, also known as Leaders Igniting Transformation, is opening their office on Mondays and Wednesdays for students after school.
“We have this beautiful office space, why not open it up to the kids, why not give a place for them to come hang out after school,” LIT Co-Executive Director Dan Maldonado said.
The office will feature resources, snacks, games, and a place for students to connect.
“We know that sometimes the city cannot be a fair place for our kids and we just wanted to give them that opportunity to come in,” Maldonado said.
Students between the ages of 14 and 25 are welcome on Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
“Not a lot of people have a lot of safe places to go to after school,” Audubon High School student Christopher Hutcherson said. “Knowing the tragic stories that be going around in the city I feel like us opening up the LIT lounge will be okay for the students to come around.”
