New Milwaukee development to offer affordable housing, short-term crisis units

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A housing project that could be the first of its kind in the country is almost finished in Milwaukee. Its called The Phoenix Residential Apartments.
It's on the city's westside and it'll have 21 apartment at lower rents and ten so-called 'crisis units.'
"It is also bringing together critical services that will help us bridge the gap not only with housing insecurity, but as well as behavior health services," said Milwaukee County Executive David Crowley.
The ten 'crisis units' will be available to bring homeless people directly off the streets and temporarily give them a roof over their head while they work on finding more permanent housing.
Those will be part of a community service facility-based inside this building meaning constant resources at hand.
And you'll notice this isn't a new building.
"We were able to designate this project historical, as it was built in 1929," said KG Development Group Principal Anthony Kazee. "This building first served as housing for priests and nuns, and then it was converted to the first Milwaukee Jewish home, so this place has always been a place of care and also social impact."
Milwaukee County invested $1.3 million into the projects, with other money coming from almost ten different sources.
The building is still under construction.
It's expected to be finished next Spring.
