'It's scary': Deputies respond to multiple fights at Milwaukee's lakefront

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- What should be a peaceful summer escape has turned into a hotspot for violence.

Three fights that deputies needed to break up broke out at Bradford Beach, leaving people concerned for their safety.

The good news, according to a Milwaukee County supervisor, is that the number of incidents is down 35% compared to this time last year.

"It's a big reduction. Today is a cool day, but warm days, we just want people to act responsibly," said Milwaukee County Supervisor Sheldon Wasserman.

Wasserman says if an incident goes down at Bradford Beach in Milwaukee, the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office will be there to respond.

"The sheriff's department has cameras there they're watching. People down there have no idea they're being watched by cameras all over the place. We are going to know who's doing it when, where, how, so it's very safe. The sheriff's department is monitoring those cameras, they're ready to respond," said Supervisor Wasserman.

This past Saturday, videos show a fight that drew a large crowd outside MooSa's Burger.

The owner of the beach staple says it's typically young people trying to have fun.

"Take a deep breath. That's life, right? At the end of the day, you don't want to do something that's going to jeopardize your future," said Al Musa, MooSa's Burger owner.

On Wednesday, Ella Apriesnig and her friends celebrated their high school graduation.

"I am feeling better that the weather is like this, because we are kind of secluded to have fun, but it was concerning at first, depending on the weather," said Apriesnig.

She says she grew up going to Bradford Beach.

"A lot of stuff started to happen at this beach. My parents were cautious about me going, just because of the safety and everything," said Apriesnig.

It's not just fights breaking out on a casual beach day. Apriesnig says it's also at organized Milwaukee events.

"There was one recently, they said it would be a water balloon fight and then fights ended up happening. A lot of people do do those things, so it's scary," said Apriesnig.

The Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office said on Saturday, three people got citations and were released.
