WAUKESHA COUNTY, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Hundreds turned out to honor and raise money for the family of fallen officer Matthew Rittner.
A fundraiser was held at Hyde Stye Tactics in Hartland to help support Rittner’s family.
A moment hasn’t gone by that his fellow brothers in blue haven’t thought about him. “I’m gonna miss everything about Matt. What he brought to the team, to his friends, a humble approach to life, he brought a smile every day,” said Trevor DeBoer, MPD officer.
Rittner, 35, was shot and killed two weeks ago while serving a search warrant as part of MPD's tactical unit on the city’s south side.
Organizers of the benefit said he made the ultimate sacrifice, so the least they could do was pay tribute to him. “We are having a fundraiser for Caroline and Kent, Matt’s wife and son. We’re collecting money to support her during this time,” said Shaunta DeBoer.
More than 500 hundred people gathered to make donations and bid on auction items for the family.
“Thinking of him and the sacrifice and what he gave up for the community, the country," said Wayne Litza of Greenfield.
Many of Rittner's colleague's have returned to work, but are still grieving his loss. They said he would want them to keep moving forward.
