Hartford native and Denver Broncos guard Quinn Meinerz surprises athletes at Adaptive Basketball Clinic in Slinger with new uniforms

SLINGER, Wis. (CBS 58) -- On Saturday morning, Slinger High School hosted dozens of athletes from Slinger, Hartford and Dodge County, for the annual adaptive recreation basketball clinic tournament.

Players faced off against members of other high school sports teams, in a friendly competition focused on teamwork, inclusion and fun.

"It's just pure happiness. If you've ever gone to a Special Olympics event, you know how truly special it is. Just to make other people happy is just truly fantastic," said Paul Shelsta, whose daughter, Alaina, plays for the Flying Hawks. "My daughter has been waiting for this moment all year, she said it's her favorite day of the year."

But this year, Alaina and the other basketball players got a slam dunk of a surprise, thanks to Hartford native and NFL star Quinn Meinerz, who plays for the Denver Broncos.

Each participant received a brand-new uniform, with their last name proudly on the back.

"That's something I always took pride in, in athletics and sports, having your last name on the back so I thought that was a great idea to upgrade the uniforms and let's put their last name on the back," Meinerz said. "It's just super cool to come back and see where this community is at and reconnect with people."

While in high school, Meinerz was coached by Shelsta and the two have remained close since.

"It's important for me to be able to come back here," Meinerz said, noting he tries to come back for the annual event to show his ongoing support. "To be a familiar face for them, to see their smile and for them to look forward to this event as much as I do is super cool."

Officials said the clinic is their biggest event of the year and that the support from the community helps keep them going.
