Woman accused of killing local dentist in Brown Deer last April will serve 3 years in prison
BROWN DEER, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Friend and family members of both 41-year-old Akintunde Bowden and 28-year-old Keionna McGowan filled the courtroom, with both sides giving impact statements.
For the first time, McGowan's mother addressed the court as her daughter was sentenced in the shooting death.
“She protected herself. In her house. In her house. She didn’t know him," said Bridgete Killibrew, McGowan’s mom.
In court, Judge David Swanson said both McGowan and Bowden were accomplished professionals who were caught in a tragic crime.
Last year, police were called to an apartment complex in Brown Deer for a fatal shooting.
McGowan told officers she was listening to mastic when Bowden told her to turn it down, which she agreed to do so.
McGowan also told officers Bowden seemed intoxicated and returned a second time, kicking her door. That's when McGowan shot him.
In February, McGowan pled no contest to homicide by negligent use of a firearm.
In court, McGowan apologized to Bowden's family, stating she was scared and wished she could do things differently.
Bowden's family told CBS 58 they didn't believe justice was served.
“It’s too many people running around here with unsportsmanlike behaviors and America has looked the other way. This is just one classical example," said Nathaniel Bowden, the victim's father.
In court, Judge Swanson said McGowan was not a danger to the public. She will also serve three years of extended supervision.
