Court records show 46-year-old Travis Doss is charged with hit-and-run resulting in death.
Prosecutors say surveillance cameras near the scene captured footage showing two vehicles strike Lewek as he crossed National Avenue around 10:30 p.m.
The video shows the sedan that initially struck Lewek continuing to drive eastbound on National Avenue, according to the criminal complaint, making a southbound turn onto S. 22nd Street.
Officials say the footage goes on to show a second vehicle strike Lewek about 19 seconds later, before continuing to drive eastbound on National. The complaint describes the second vehicle as a two-door Chevrolet Monte Carlo.
Prosecutors say about a minute-and-a-half after hitting Lewek, the sedan that initially struck Lewek returned to the scene, stopped, then again drove away.
Officers learned the license plate information of the initial striking vehicle through traffic camera footage and stopped the driver- identified as Doss - near 73rd and Capitol the following afternoon.
The complaint says when interviewed by authorities, Doss admitted to hitting a man in the road the night prior, stating that he drove around the corner and back to the scene to see how the victim was doing. He said he thought the man was moving a bit, according to the complaint, and drove down a side street to decide what to do. Doss reportedly told detectives he left the scene to decide whether to call the police or turn himself in but thought it would not make a difference at that point.
Milwaukee police continue to seek the second driver involved.
