Car crashes into apartment building in Greenfield, at least 3 without a place to live
GREENFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) – No one was hurt after a car crashed into a building at the American Colony Apartments near 27th and Layton, according to those who live there.
Rasha Ghanim and her husband, Muhammad Sabha, live in the unit that was hit by a car around 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday, June 3. Ghanim said she was inside her apartment sleeping when she discovered a car had driven through a brick wall into her living space.
“I opened the door and there was dust everywhere, and there were so many things broken," Ghanim said. “At first I thought I was dreaming.”
“Usually my mom sits there, the same spot where the car hit, otherwise the car would have been on top of her," Sabha said. “It’s a blessing that nothing happened, except it could have been worse.”
Robert Van Horn lives in the unit above where the car hit. He said his dog had a gash in its eye from the debris.
“I decided to take a shower this morning and as I was in the shower, I heard this big boom. I thought something blew up, like a gas line," Van Horn said.
Van Horn, Ghanim and Sabha said they spoke with the driver of the car. They said the driver told them he was coming home from work on third shift and was exhausted behind the wheel, causing him to crash.
“If you are so tired and sleepy, park your car, take a nap, then move," said Sabha. "It's unfortunate."
"He was very apologetic," Van Horn said, referencing the driver. “I've worked third shift before; you do get tired. Just know your limits."
Van Horn, Ghanim and Sabha said they will now have to search for somewhere else to sleep.
“I have a job, I don’t know when I’ll be able to go back to work and what to do, where to stay, what to do with my other stuff," Ghanim said.
However, all three residents impacted are all thankful everyone involved is safe.
“This is just material, it can be changed and replaced," Sabha said.
“It’s something you don’t see every day, and you don’t expect," Van Horn said. “Everyone walked away scared, but things can be replaced.”
CBS 58 has reached out to the Greenfield Police Department. Officers were on scene at the time of the crash. We haven't learned any information yet.
