Milwaukee Brat House holds 'Last Schlitz on Earth' party for discontinued beer
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE, CBS 58 – With Schlitz beer officially being discontinued, Milwaukee Brat House invited people to gather for one final toast.
Scott Schaefer, the owner of Milwaukee Brat House, said locations in Milwaukee and Shorewood featured Schlitz specials, limited-edition merchandise, giveaways, and a “Kick the Keg” contest celebrating the very last pours of Schlitz served at each location.
“It’s been a brand that we’ve been so loyal to for so long.” Schaefer said.
People who came to the event shared memories of their years enjoying the beer.
“It brought back memories of my dad when I was a kid drinking Schlitz,” said Steve Dee, who attended the “Last Schlitz on Earth” party.
Pabst Brewing Co. confirmed it is halting production of Schlitz, once dubbed "The beer that made Milwaukee famous."
"Unfortunately, we have seen continued increases in our costs to store and ship certain products and have had to make the tough choice to place Schlitz Premium on hiatus," the company said in a statement.
Founded in 1849, the brand grew massively in 1871 after the Great Chicago Fire destroyed many of Chicago's breweries.
