MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Judy Cohen from Lakeside Educational Services joined us on Tuesday, Jan. 20 with information about  special education in Wisconsin.

Cohen explained that special education provides an individualized education program for children who meet criteria for a disability. The programs are governed by federal and state laws, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Information Cohen cited included that 15 percent of children in Wisconsin receive special education services, with the five most common disability categories being autism, other health impairment, specific learning disabilities, speech and language impairment and developmental delay for kids ages 3 to 5.

Cohen discussed how a child is referred for special education, what happens during the evaluation process and how parents can participate in the process. She explained that anyone can refer a child for special education, including parents, teachers, nurses or doctors.
