Gard wins debut as Badgers head coach

Greg Gard's first game after Bo Ryan's retirement had a little more drama than the Badgers would have liked, but the outcome still went the Badgers way.

Nigel Hayes scored 24 points, Ethan Happ added 16 and Vitto Brown poured in 15, as Wisconsin held off UW-Green Bay 84-79 Wednesday in Madison.

The Badgers opened up a 21 point lead as the first half ended, but the Phoenix rallied to make it a three point game in the final minute before Brown and Jordan Hill made free throws to help Wisconsin ice the win in Gard's debut.
