U-Haul contacting customers after April 6 fire at Walker's Point storage facility

CBS 58

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- U-Haul says in a Thursday, April 9 press release that it has begun contacting first-floor customers in the building where a fire broke out Monday, April 6 at its Walker's Point storage facility on 1st St.

About 25 storage units were damaged by the fire, with additional units on all four floors sustaining water, smoke or soot damage, according to the company. Moving labor, boxes and portable storage containers are being offered to affected customers, with staff on site through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

They are asking that only tenants with storage units on the first floor of building D visit at this time, as they will continue contacting other customers to address their respective situations. In the meantime, they are also working to retore power.

Milwaukee Fire Chief Aaron Lipski noted earlier in the week that the building lacks sprinklers, saying the damage could have been contained to a small area had they been installed.

This was the second fire at the property in roughly 10 weeks, though U-Haul said the two fires occurred in different buildings and are unrelated. The cause of the latest fire remains under investigation.
