In a Facebook post, the department said 60-year-old Robert Beren's commitment to the community will never be forgotten.
"We are heartbroken to share the unexpected active duty passing of Firefighter/EMT Robert Berens, who faithfully served the South Shore Fire Department for 36 years. His dedication, courage, and commitment to our community will never be forgotten."

"Robert “Bob” Berens, known affectionately as Bob or Bobby, lived life to the fullest through his love of sports, family, and firefighting. His true passion was serving as a firefighter, a calling that defined his character, and staying active on the softball field. He also dedicated countless hours to coaching wrestling at several high schools throughout Racine, inspiring young athletes with his energy, humor, and heart. Bob was truly one of a kind, his presence could light up any room, and his laughter was contagious. He had a natural gift for making everyone feel welcome, turning friendships into lifelong family bonds. Loved by so many, Bob leaves behind a legacy of kindness, commitment, and joy that will continue to live on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten."
