People push to expand IVF access during National Infertility Awareness week
CBS 58 WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- People across Wisconsin are sharing their IVF journeys and pushing for changes at the state level, during National Infertility Awareness Week.
IVF stands for 'In Vitro Fertilization.'
IVF helps people get pregnant by fertilizing eggs in a lab, then placing the embryo in the uterus.
Wednesday, April 22, people shared their experience as lawmakers pushed to expand access and lower costs.
"We understand that Wisconsinites deserve, number one, have their legal right to access fertility treatment protected no matter what the Supreme Court, no matter what the Trump Administration does and republicans in the state," said State Senator Kelda Roys, (D-Madison).
New federal efforts aim to expand IVF access through employers and lower costs but some critics say it doesn't go far enough.
"A family as many different looks and that's a beautiful thing. A single person, a non-married couple or a same-sex couple should be able to make the same choices a married man and woman make," said State Representative Jodi Emerson, (D-Eau Claire).
Wisconsin is one of 25 states that currently doesn't have infertility insurance laws.
