MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- A 50-year-old Green Bay man is facing criminal charges after authorities say he vandalized the Church of the Gesu on the Marquette University campus.

The incident happened on Sunday, April 5.

According to a criminal complaint, a witness walking near the church observed a man -- later identified as Aron Ferris -- striking one of the main doors of the church with an axe and called police.

Marquette University Police Department officers arrived at the scene and located Ferris inside the church seated on the top step of the alter holding an axe and flipping it around.

The complaint says an officer ordered Ferris to drop the axe. When Ferris was asked if he had any other weapons, officials say he took out two knives and threw them to his left.

According to the complaint, Ferris repeatedly stated he was "God" and he "created everyone." Ferris reportedly said officers needed to listen to him while he spoke about being the "chosen one," and "if you shoot me, the bullet will head towards me and then turn around and go back towards you."

Ferris, the complaint says, also made references about the Hulk, a fictional superhero.

After several minutes of back and forth with Ferris, officers were able to take him into custody.

A search of Ferris' belongings uncovered a rifle, handgun, and several loaded magazines.

According to the complaint, Ferris said he thought the church was going to be open with it being Easter Sunday, and that there would be people there he could tell his story to.

Ferris reportedly stated he brought his gun to the church so he could get attention and draw the media.

Ferris has been charged with one count of criminal damage to religious property and disorderly conduct, use of a dangerous weapon.

Investigators say the vandalism to the church is estimated at $50,000.
