MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's young people will have a positive impact on the environment through Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS).
The district announced a new five-year sustainability action plan on this Earth Day.
The plan is taking input from staff, students and families to make the district's environments healthier.
MPS is getting more than $39 million in grant funds to support the plan.
"This plan asks everyone to lead from their current role. Whether you're a facilities maintenance staff or district chief," said Chelsea Malacara, sustainability project specialist. "It asks our students to share with us what they need and continue to hold the bar high.
This fall, the district is starting a Student Sustainability Advisory Committee, so Milwaukee's kids can give suggestions to the district.
The announcement was made at Morse Middle School, where students were already at work cleaning up school grounds and learning about their environment.
