MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS) announced plans on Monday, April 13 to add an estimated 89 new teachers to classrooms next school year.
It comes amid ongoing administrative cuts aimed at addressing a $46 million budget gap.
The new teachers will be allocated to schools based on need.
The new positions are not unexpected.
MPS Superintendent Dr. Brenda Cassellius has long made it a goal to redirect funds into classroom learning.
"This is a repositioning and getting resources closest to our children. This is important for their outcomes and their success, and really ensuring they can read at grade level," said Cassellius.
In addition, an estimated 63 new paraprofessional positions will be created, and five more psychologists will be added which will be funded by a new federal grant.
