WISCONSIN (CBS 58) -- The two men running for Wisconsin attorney general met on the debate stage Thursday, Oct. 27.
Incumbent Democrat Josh Kaul squared off against Republican challenger Eric Toney in a heated debate in Madison.
The candidates sparred over a number of issues, particularly the state's 1849 abortion ban.
Toney confirmed he would not prosecute women or doctors who cross state lines to get or perform abortions. But Kaul made the case that reproductive rights would be threatened under a Republican administration.
"If Tim Michels and Eric Toney are elected to office, not only are they not going to add exceptions for cases of rape and incest, they're going to go further and make the law even more restrictive," said Kaul. "They may very well put in restrictions for people trying to leave the state."
"No, the law does not allow for the prosecution of a woman, it doesn't allow for a prosecution across state lines. And that will not happen with mas as AG because I follow the rule of law," Toney said.
Toney also said district attorneys should not cross county lines to prosecute abortions, walking back a statement he made to the contrary in July.
One thing both candidates agreed on? Accepting the results, whatever they may be on election night.
