CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Walgreens on North Ave. and 27th St. closed down this week, the company citing safety concerns.
“Despite our actions and investments in private security, persistent safety challenges at our North Avenue store do not allow us to operate sustainably,” The Walgreens communications team told CBS 58.
Charlicia Brown has lived across the street from the Walgreens for nearly 15 years.
“I’ve heard of situations that have happened but as many times as I have went, and my children, we’ve never run into a situation,” Brown said.
Brown has used the Walgreens thousands of times and relied on for life essentials.
“I was mad, I was angry, I was sad, I’m like oh my god like me and my sons, my sons would walk two-three times a day,” Brown said.
The Hayat Pharmacy on North Ave. is the only pharmacy in the area after the closure.
“This one is the closest one to the one that is closing so we are trying to help the same population that was already served by Walgreens,” Pharmacist Mohammed Elghannam said.
The recent Walgreens closure adds to a list of north side closures, including the Pick n’ Save on 35th.
“Every time you turn around something is closing, that’s needed in the community, and in our community the lack of resources really hurts us,” Brown said.
