COPY-DNR: Hunter shot by dog named Trigger
A 25-year-old Avilla woman was shot in the foot when her dog, named Trigger, stepped on her shotgun.
Allie Carter, 25, was at a waterfowl hunt at the Tri-County Fish and Wildlife area Saturday around 10 a.m. when the shooting happened, according to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Division of Law Enforcement.
Carter was repositioning and set her shotgun on the ground at her feet.
Her dog, named Trigger, stepped on the gun and it fired, according to the DNR.
The safety was not on.
Carter was shot in the foot at point-blank range.
She was taken to Kosciusko Community Hospital and transferred to Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne for injuries to her left foot and toes.
The DNR wants the public to remember to always keep the muzzle of a firearm in a safe direction and to use all safety mechanisms.
The DNR says Carter had not taken a hunter safety course.
Anyone born after December 31, 1986 is required to take a certified hunter education course before purchasing a hunting license.
