MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Charges are now filed in the shooting death of a child in Milwaukee.

Forty-two-year-old Carlouis Durant is charged with neglecting a child - consequence is death, after the 2-year-old girl in his care died of a gunshot wound.

According to the criminal complaint, Durant lives in a home with his significant other, his significant other's children, and her 2-year-old grandchild.

When questioned by investigators, Durant said he'd left the child in the care of another family member while running errands the morning of April 29. He said he came home to use the bathroom and took off his gun holster, setting the holster and firearm on the living room couch. The complaint says he then heard a loud "bang" and rushed back into the living room, where he found the 2-year-old shot.

He said he rushed the child to the hospital, where she later died.

A medical examiner's report concluded the child died as a result of complications from a gunshot wound to the head. The manner of death has not yet been determined, and the events leading up to the shooting remain under investigation.

Court records show cash bond has been set at $20,000.

Durant is due in court for a preliminary hearing May 11.
