Annual Girls' Day at Milwaukee City Hall aims to empower young women
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Hundreds of young girls got to meet public servants they may never have met if it weren't for Girls' Day, an event that's been happening at Milwaukee City Hall for the last 16 years.
Each year, the event falls in March during Women's History Month, and students are able to meet women in Milwaukee's government and community to learn about what they do and how they can get involved.
District 6 Alderwoman Milele Coggs started Girls' Day a few years after she first joined the Milwaukee Common Council.
And she says it's an empowering opportunity for education and networking led by women for women.
"We want more women to run for office as well as consider different careers in public service. But often times, women have to be asked. We want them to consider Girls' Day at City Hall their ask, so that they can begin thinking about careers in public service," said Coggs.
Organizers also offered a Girls' Day scholarship and presented the Vel R. Phillips Trailblazer Award.
