A deal to die for: 'Mausoleum' on sale at Oconomowoc thrift store gets new life with West Bend owner
CBS 58 OCONOMOWOC, Wis. (CBS 58) – At the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Oconomowoc, you never know when you might find something old and bring it new life.
Bridgette Bronk, the store manager, said a customer came in with an item that received a lot of attention: a marble "mausoleum."
“It’s not something you see every day,” Bronk said. “It blew up on Facebook.”
The item listed as a “tall white marble storage locker” is selling for $199.99 dollars. It has name plates of decedents and cremation urn cabinets. The man who brought four of the items to the store told Bronk they were columbarium models, made of pressboard.
“These were not used,” Bronk said. “Thank God.”
Who would buy something like this? Leah Duckert-Kroll of West Bend said her best friend saw a picture of the storage locker online. As a former employee at a Milwaukee cemetery, Duckert-Kroll said a real columbarium could go for thousands and knew this purchase was a deal to die for.
“Some people collect dolls, or some people collect little figurines, I collect death care items,” Duckert-Kroll said. “I don’t really know where it's going in my house, or what I’m going to do with it yet. Eventually, I’ll figure it out.”
Duckert-Kroll, who currently works in the tour and travel industry, hopes the columbarium becomes a conversation piece.
“I think people are really curious about death. They have a lot of questions about it, but they think it's macabre or morbid and they think it's taboo to talk about. Duckert-Kroll said. “I try to normalize the conversations around death. I don’t want people to think it's weird to talk about, or it's creepy, or it's scary, or it's sad. Some parts of death are sad, but it's part of life.”
