Violent crimes, including homicides down in the City of Milwaukee
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Milwaukee's murder rate is falling, according to new data released by the Milwaukee Police Department.
Milwaukee police say homicides have gone down 23% from last year and investigators have solved 88% of those cases.
“I want to keep seeing lower crime numbers and I want to see these partnerships continue because I feel like they’re having a direct impact on public safety here in the city," said Milwaukee Mayor Cavalier Johnson. “Categories like rape, robbery, auto theft, arson, homicide, they continue on a downward trend.”
The Milwaukee Police Department’s latest quarterly report shows crime is down across the board, for the most part. Violent crimes and property crimes have both decreased by 4%, but there are some concerns Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman still has.
Just recently, a 15-year-old Milwaukee boy was sentenced to 10 years behind bars for his role in the violent kidnapping of a 7-year-old child.
“Once a kid is arrested by us, the act has already been committed and I will say this, it’s already too late," said Norman.
Thefts have increased by 8%. So far this year, there have been nearly 4,100 hit and runs -- a 1% increase from last year.
“Don’t leave your cars running and leaving them unattended. Many of those are crimes of opportunity," said Norman.
Norman says to keep crime on a downward trend, its important to reach children and to continue community outreach along, with policework.
“We must reach these kids long before these acts occur and wrap our arms around teaching them approach behaviors and just plain human kindness," said Norman.
