Vendor says last-minute Bastille Days cancellation leaves her without booth
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — A vendor who spent months preparing for Bastille Days says she learned early Friday, the day the festival began, that she no longer had a place to sell her products, leaving her with hundreds of items and no booth.
Yam's Made Lemonade planned to sell at Bastille Days all weekend.
But instead of setting up Friday, owner Hayem Omar says she received an email just after 1 a.m. that morning telling her there was no longer space for her booth.
The email said the festival would no longer extend down Jefferson Street past Wells Street, where her booth had been assigned.
Omar was not available to speak on camera, but on Saturday she told us over the phone she had already spent months preparing and stocked enough supplies for the weekend.
She followed up in an email, saying:
"On Friday morning at 1:06 a.m. we received an email saying they could no longer accommodate us for no real reason. I prepared to sell 1,000 items."
Omar says she had already bought cups with custom stickers, French-themed displays and other supplies for the weekend.
The East Town Association sent us a statement saying, in part:
"We reached out to the affected vendor Friday, and offered her a vendor space in the park. We’re refunding in full their fees, paying for all their goods purchased for the event, and inviting them to vend for free in 2027."
Omar acknowledged she was offered a space for Saturday or Sunday but said by then she had already let go of her staff.
Omar says she’s still waiting to hear back from East Town on what costs will be covered beyond her vendor fee.
"This is the most unorganized they have ever been, and for an event as big as Bastille Days I would have hoped for something different," Omar said.
