Brewers draft California shortstop Trey Ebel with No. 25 pick

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS 58) — The Milwaukee Brewers selected California high school shortstop Trey Ebel with the 25th overall pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.

Ebel is the son of Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Dino Ebel and joins his older brother, Brady Ebel, who was selected by the Brewers with the 32nd overall pick in the 2025 MLB Draft.

According to MLB.com, some scouts believe Trey Ebel is a more polished player than his brother was at the same stage. Evaluators praise his consistent at-bats, ability to handle both velocity and breaking pitches, disciplined approach at the plate and strong bat speed.

A right-handed hitter, Ebel is considered more of a contact hitter than a power bat at this stage, though scouts believe he has untapped power potential.

MLB.com also noted Ebel's strong work ethic, highlighting that he trained with Brewers infielder Brice Turang to improve his speed. Defensively, scouts view him as a natural shortstop with good instincts and a strong arm, though some project he could eventually move to third base.

MLB.com ranked Ebel as the No. 107 overall prospect in this year's draft, grading him as follows:

  • Hitting: 55
  • Power: 45
  • Running: 45
  • Arm: 55
  • Fielding: 50
  • Overall: 45

The 17-year-old is committed to Texas A&M, and the recommended slot value for the 25th overall pick is approximately $3.7 million.

The Brewers will make three more selections Saturday, including the 66th, 102nd and 130th overall picks.
