RACINE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Racine Unified School District student will be heading to prom on Saturday, May 15 in style.

On Thursday, May 13, Bubba Ruiz, who has special needs, was crowned prom king during a virtual school assembly.

“He’s revered in this building, he’s loved in this building, in our community,” The Academies of Racine at Park High School directing principal Jeffrey Miller said. “I’m really happy for him, I’m really happy for his family, I’m happy for all of his friends that have been there for him throughout all these years. It’s just a really cool thing”

Ruiz’s mom was also there to celebrate.

“There’s no words,” Rachel Jaramillo said “I’m just glad that everybody can support him in every way.”

Miller said from the start, votes came streaming in for Bubba.

“He makes people’s lives a little bit better,” Miller said.

Bubba plans on arriving to prom in a sports car with Miller.
