Sheboygan North High School student hospitalized after near-drowning during gym class
SHEBOYGAN, Wis. (CBS 58) -- A Sheboygan North High School student was hospitalized Tuesday after a drowning incident in the school's pool.
Principal John Matczak notified families Tuesday afternoon.
So far, the district has not shared the student's condition.
Medical personnel radioed that it was a 14-year-old boy, and that he was breathing as they worked on him before he was flown to the hospital.
Dispatchers told first responders, "Respond to Sheboygan North High, 2926 N. 10th Street. Call is for possible drowning."
The initial call was made at around 2:48 Tuesday afternoon.
Moments later, dispatchers radioed, "CPR in progress."
A letter that was eventually sent out to North High families confirmed there was "a medical emergency in the pool" during 7th period PE class.
The North High medical response team was called, along with the Sheboygan police and fire departments. The fire department confirmed an incident at the high school but would not share any more information.
The letter home to families said, "The student was transported to the hospital for medical assistance."
And radio communication from first responders to the hospital sheds some light on what happened. They said, "Aurora, we have a 14-year-old male. CPR was just being done for drowning in the North High pool. He's breathing. We're just working on the airway. We may have to tube."
The boy was flown to Aurora Medical Center. He arrived about an hour after the initial call.
The letter to families closed by saying nearby students saw the medical emergency, and "North staff will be available for any student needing help processing today's incident."
But the letter did not share the student's condition.
Voicemails and emails for Principal John Matczak were not returned. And messages to the Sheboygan School District were also not returned.
