Milwaukee vehicle thefts more than double in January 2021 from same time last year

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- Car thefts are at an all-time high in Milwaukee. 

According to the Milwaukee Police Department, there were 791 auto thefts in January 2021, compared to 313 in January of 2020 -- that's an increase of 60 percent. 

A study from AutoinsuranceEZ ranked Milwaukee as the 12th highest vehicle theft rate in the country back in November. 

A CBS 58 report uncovered the most stolen vehicles in Milwaukee are: Kia, Hyundai, and Honda models. 

Police say crooks usually steal cars between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m., and typically the first thing they do is break the window.
