Milwaukee County transit system to get $14.7 million federal grant for infrastructure upgrades
CBS 58 MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The U.S. Department of Transportation has awarded $14.7 million to Milwaukee County to modernize Milwaukee County Transit System facilities, County Executive David Crowley announced on Tuesday, July 7.
The funding, secured through USDOT's BUILD grant program, will replace six underground fuel tanks with modern, monitored versions, install six new bus lifts and upgrade lighting across MCTS facilities, according to the county.
Officials say the lighting upgrades alone could cut energy use by up to 50% in maintenance facilities.
"Strategic capital investments are essential to building a sustainable future for our transit system," Crowley said in a statement, adding that the upgrades should mean fewer service disruptions for riders, businesses and commuters.
Implementation of the project is expected to begin in 2027.
