MILWAUKEE, Wis. (CBS 58) -- The person accused of accidentally fatally shooting his mother last month while trying to protect her appeared in Milwaukee court to plead not guilty.
Jaylen Gray, 18, waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday afternoon, May 14, before entering the plea.
He's facing two charges, including possession of a dangerous weapon.
Court documents reveal Gray came home on April 18 to find his mother, Amber Gray, 34, fighting with his stepdad, Ziare Dalton, 26.
Investigators said Gray told them he saw Dalton becoming physically violent toward his mom, causing him to pick up a gun in the home and shoot in an attempt "to protect his family."
However, he didn't realize until "later" that a shot had struck his mom.
Dalton is now being charged with felony murder. He will have his preliminary hearing on Friday, May 16.
Gray will appear next in court on May 30.
