‘It was the worst of the worst’: Milwaukee homes impacted by flooding

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) - Several homes on the south side of Milwaukee were impacted by flash flooding that hit SE Wisconsin on Saturday night, Aug. 9.

Homeowners on 21st St. near the Wilson Park area saw flooding impact their homes, specifically their basements.

Marty Schmidt lives on 21st St. and has been there for over 30 years.

“All the people we know around here have had some water in their basements,” Schmidt said.

Cynthia Ewert and her husband have lived on 21st St. for 43 years, she says this is not the first time basements have flooded.

“I know we’re living on a lower level plain down here, but we never thought this would happen again,” Ewert said.

Ewert said there was two feet of water in their basement when the rain stopped early Sunday morning.

The Ewert’s were prepared for flooding, they had their furnace and other items on cinder blocks to keep them off the ground.

“We have our furnace on cinder blocks, and it totally ruined our whole furnace,” Ewert said. “It has to be replaced.”

Ewert and Schmidt say this is the worst flooding they have seen since they moved in.

“Last night it was the worst of the worst,” Schmidt said.

Ewert and her husband were forced to get rid of several things they have collected over the last four decades.

“You go on living, you do things a little differently then and readjust your life,” Ewert said. “I know other families are worse than we are, so like I said I’m just thankful that we’re ok.”
