‘It’s devastating’: Family of man killed in Waukesha industrial accident raising funds for his partner
Family WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) – Those close to the man killed while working at a Waukesha recycling facility are raising money for his partner, who is now left struggling to pay for daily expenses.
On Monday, 65-year-old Joel "Homer" Jundt died at Waukesha Iron & Metal. He leaves behind a loving partner, Pam Sallmann. Her daughter and stepdaughter say Jundt’s sudden death has been heartbreaking for her and their family.
“It’s devastating. It’s a horrible tragedy. Very unexpected, so everyone is going through it right now,” said Christina Meinholz, Sallmann’s stepdaughter.
Sallmann is facing not only the overwhelming grief of losing her best friend, but also the sudden financial uncertainty of how she will cover her mortgage, utilities, and daily expenses on her own. A GoFundMe to support her has been circulating online.
“The outpouring for her of people’s condolences and just reaching out to her is really important for her and has helped a lot,” Maas said.
On Friday, the Waukesha County Medical Examiner said a cause of death for Jundt has not been released yet.
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) confirms they've opened an investigation at the facility. They have six months to complete it.
Waukesha Iron & Metal released a statement Tuesday, saying in part, "Our thoughts and prayers are with the employee's family, friends, and coworkers during this difficult time."
The company was previously cited for a worker's death in 2015. At the time, OSHA cited them for 11 safety violations, proposing $42,000 in fines.
Waukesha Iron & Metal says they are cooperating fully with the investigation.
