'It’s a special game': Waukesha West High School spreads awareness for cardiac emergency preparedness

CBS 58

WUAKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Waukesha West High School made it their mission to spread heart health awareness on and off the court.

It may have looked like just another tense match up on the court, but Friday's game was about more than just scoring points.

"It’s a special game that we have every season and it’s an honor of David Skogman, who is a former Waukesha West superstar who played for me," said Don LaValle, the Waukesha West head varsity basketball coach. "He won a conference championship, he won a regional championship, this guy he was just an amazing young man.”

The school's 6th annual 'Have Heart' fundraiser continues to honor Skogman's story.

Back in 2018, he suffered a cardiac event in the middle of a game.

"It was very scary," said LaValle. "The AED shocked him, got him breathing again, and David fights his way back on his path to go play division one.”

The AED saved his life and now the school does everything they can to make sure if there's a next time, others are prepared.

“Get your heart checked out," said Tim Guilette, with the Waukesha West Basketball program. "These things could be caught early. Through the past five, six years we've been doing this. Youths have gone and got tested and some have been detected early and it’s been great to see that ahead of time and hopefully save some lives."

So instead of just cheering in the stands, there was CPR training provided on the sidelines.

The fundraiser helped raise money to benefit Project ADAM, which helps provide cardiac preparedness tools across the nation and Children's Wisconsin.

"It’s a story of perseverance and gratitude and it’s just a fun night to celebrate all of those things around this beautiful sport that I love, that David loves, that our community loves.”
