MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) — Family has identified a man who was shot and killed by Milwaukee police officers Tuesday after a lengthy pursuit.
According to the Milwaukee Police Department, officers pulled over a car near Fond du Lac Avenue and Capitol Drive for a registration violation, and the driver took off.
Family of the driver identified him Wednesday as 38-year-old Joshua Wippert.
His mother, Lynette, told CBS 58's Jenna Wells off camera that Wippert was on the phone with her as he was fleeing officers.
He stopped his car near 98th and Lisbon and ran to his mother's house, with officers chasing behind.
According to MPD, Wippert was holding a gun during the foot chase, and when officers ordered him to drop it, he did not. That's when officers fired.
Wippert's mother said he was shot on her front porch. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Lynette said she knew her son had a gun, describing it as a .45 pistol, but he could not legally own firearms as he was on probation for an armed robbery charge from 2019.
Court records show Wippert served three years for felony armed robbery before he was released in 2022 for the substance abuse program.
According to his mother, Wippert once told her if he was ever caught by officers again, he would shoot himself, because he didn't want to go back to prison.
There are still bullet holes in his mother's front door.
Lynette said she believes her son knew he would be killed if he didn't drop his gun.
Milwaukee police said another person was in the car, who ran away.
Police said they know who that suspect is, but the person hasn't been arrested.
