MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- It might not feel like spring, but a sign of the season change is back. Milwaukee's beer garden at South Shore Terrace opened on Wednesday, April 3.

Even the snow couldn't keep them away.

"It's snowing this morning. You're waking up, you're like what am I gonna do? Go get free beer," said Kristin Ludwig, beer garden visitor.

"I called to make sure that it was gonna be open because I didn't want to come here, and it not be open. Where we parked walking across was cold, once we got here it's nice," said Rick and Barbara Lichman, beer garden visitors.

From the clanking of glasses to the sips of a tasty brew.

"It's free, it's cold and it's good," said Marty Lahaye, beer garden visitor.

"It tastes good. It's Leinenkugel's so it's always good," said Rose Marczewski, beer garden visitor.

The open-air beer garden that offers Milwaukee's picturesque skyline view is back in business.

"We know that many people are gonna be coming to our beer gardens just to enjoy the nice views, to enjoy the camaraderie," said David Crowley, Milwaukee County Executive.

Milwaukee's newly re-elected county executive kicking things off at South Shore Terrace Wednesday afternoon.

This year, raising a glass to a new campaign, "Cheers to Our Parks." Molson Coors will match dollar for dollar that's donated up to $250 thousand.

"So, we're looking for individual donors, we're looking for other philanthropy, we're looking for anyone that’s willing to help us," said Guy Smith, Executive Director, Milwaukee County Parks.

"In our world that is rapidly digitizing, disconnected and expensive, having free, accessible open green space means better health outcomes, youth enrichment, community connectiveness," said Rebecca Stoner, Executive Director, Milwaukee County Parks Foundation.

In 2023, South Shore Terrace sold over 100-thousand beers. And the first half hour of the 2024 season offered free pints of Summer Shandy.

Long after the free Summer Shandy ran out, the root beer tapper was still flowing.
