Cleanup underway in Lomira as community braces for more storms
CBS 58 LOMIRA, Wis. (CBS 58) -- Cleanup continues in Lomira after a strong storm moved through the area Wednesday, June 10, bringing winds reported up to 80 miles per hour and leaving significant damage behind.
Residents are now bracing for another round of storms Thursday as recovery efforts get underway.
“The winds kicked up. I mean, they were bad,” said Jeffrey Zylka, a Lomira resident.
It did not take long for the storm to move through Lomira, but what it left behind sits in yards and on the streets.
“It was terrible,” said Gene Wenlaff, another resident.
At the Mary Lane Apartments, high winds tore off part of the roof, and caution tape now blocks access to the building.
“There had to have been 25-50 firemen here. Lots of firetrucks,” said Zylka.
Branches pulled from roadways were gathered into piles as the community began cleanup efforts.
The Village of Lomira opened its doors to residents who could not remain in their homes.
“This is my community I grew up in,” said Kristy Stommel, a resident.
Down the street, neighbors helped Wenlaff repair his mobile home after it was heavily damaged.
“It ripped it. I mean everything just shattered, and I thought, oh my God, here we go,” said Wenlaff.
The Village of Lomira says some residents may still experience power outages as officials continue to assess damage across the area.
“You almost got to experience something like this. Which I hope nobody has to,” said Wenlaff.
Despite the damage, Wenlaff says he’s still got his eyes on the sky for the storms ahead.
“Thank God everything’s okay. Everybody around here is okay,” said Wenlaff.
