'A quality project:' New luxury affordable housing complex to open in Brookfield next month
BROOKFIELD, Wis. (CBS 58) -- One month from today, a new luxury affordable housing complex will open in Brookfield, offering hundreds of units at below-market rent to people who make a percentage of the annual median income.
The Flats at Bishop's Woods features 203 units with amenities like a community club room, a gym, high ceilings, and walk-in closets.
Those eligible for these apartments are typically subject to income restrictions ranging from 30% to 80% of the median income.
"I think that's what drew me here because it is income-restricted and it'll help a lot of people that's not willing to pay $2,000 for rent," said Roxie Thomas, who is in the middle of her application. "You can't beat it, like you really can't beat it anywhere else."
It's that goal of helping people that excited Brookfield Mayor Steve Ponto, who toured the complex Wednesday.
"A lot of businesses really emphasize the problems that they were having attracting people to Waukesha County and the City of Brookfield because there wasn't affordable housing or workforce housing nearby," Mayor Ponto said. "This is now going to really address a significant problem for this county and the city... it'll bring a lot of good people into this area."
Officials like Shreedhar Ranabhat with the Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA), said this project is a long time in the making.
"We are really thrilled about that opportunity to really place a quality project like this that'll be helping folks," Ranabhat said. "Every community has the need for affordable housing."
The apartments are expected to open on Oct. 24, 2025. To apply, click here.
