CBS 58's Hometown Athlete: Wisconsin Lutheran College combine gives overlooked football players a chance
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- "The hope behind this event is we wanna get kids opportunities to find the school that's right for them," Wisconsin Lutheran head football coach Eric Treske says. "And we wanna take away any barriers of cost or travel or some of those things."
This is the sixth annual free college showcase at Wisconsin Lutheran College, for kids from Milwaukee who otherwise are overlooked.
"It was inspired five years ago, after Covid," Treske says. "We had worked with some of the MPS coaches to create this event. And it's only grown since, so I think it started around 80 kids that first year. And this year we had 235 sign up. We've got coaches literally from every level. So, you know, from junior college, College of DuPage, national champs are here. All the way up to the FCS Division 1 level and everything in between. And really the hope is that each one of these kids, there's a place that's right for them."
It's the chance to be a life-changing opportunity.
"What's been awesome is we've had kids go on and say this is my first showcase. I never really understood what was expected of me," Treske says.
And at Wisco's Raabe Stadium, they just want these young kids to feel like they aren't overlooked.
"We, at Wisconsin Lutheran, we love our city," Treske says. "And we wanna help the kids in our city grow the gifts that we know God gave them."
