New video shows chaotic police response to Waukesha Meijer hostage situation

WAUKESHA, Wis. (CBS 58) — New video shows the chaotic response to a hostage situation inside a Waukesha Meijer store Thursday, July 30.

Waukesha police confirmed the suspect is 21 years old and a Waukesha resident. Police said he called 911 himself, reported that he had a hostage and asked to speak with a negotiator.

The new video was recorded by a witness who was inside the store as police responded. CBS 58 blurred the most graphic portions.

The video begins with the suspect and victim lying on the store floor moments after an officer shot the suspect.

The 59-year-old victim, who is closest to the camera, is seen receiving medical attention while officers attend to the wounded suspect in the background.

Officers then help the victim to his feet and walk him out of the store. He is seen holding his right hand in the air. His thumb is missing, and his shirt is covered in blood.

Waukesha police said it remains unclear how the victim was injured or whether the suspect knew him.

The video also shows the massive police response. Witnesses told CBS 58 they saw tactical officers running through the store wearing protective gear and carrying AR-15-style rifles.

Later in the video, officers continue providing medical attention to the suspect, who is handcuffed and lying face down on the floor.

Waukesha police have not released the suspect's identity.

Body camera video captured the incident and will be released as part of the independent investigation.

The police chief said Thursday night that he is confident the officers acted according to department policies and protocols.
