Young adults credited with rescuing family from Lodi house fire
LODI, Wis. (CBS 58) - A group of young adults is being credited with rescuing an elderly couple and several family members from a house fire north of Madison on the night of July 4.
The group, made up of 19- and 20-year-olds, said they were gathered nearby when they noticed signs of a fire across the street.
According to the group, they forced open a door and entered the burning home in search of anyone inside.
"Honestly, at that point, that was the only thing that crossed my mind," said Rhylan Nehls.
"We started calling out for people and asking if anybody was in there, and then we ended up getting quite a bit of responses," said Lucas Opper. "There ended up being five or six people in the house."
"So you're kind of just feeling around, yelling, and then I heard a couple in the room on the left, so I went in there and got them out," added Gavin Klahn.
"It all comes down to luck," said Ayden Schroud. "Like it just happens that we're walking down the street and we seen the fire and all stuck together to get them all out."
According to a fundraising page, the 91-year-old homeowner was celebrating a birthday with family members when the fire broke out.
The Lodi Fire Department says fireworks in the area may have caused the fire. The cause remains under investigation.
