WisDOT's State Traffic Operations Center Monitoring Holiday Traffic

If you're traveling for the thanksgiving holiday, be prepared! Wednesday is one of the busiest travel days of the year. AAA 48.7 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more this week, that's the most Thanksgiving travelers since 2007.

CBS 58 got an inside look into the Wisconsin DOT’s State Traffic Operations Center. It’s staffed 24/7, 365 days a year, monitoring more than 400 cameras across the state.

Staff here look at those cameras to monitor weather conditions, travel speeds and travel times.

They also look for any incidents or accidents on the roadways.

In an effort to clear them and alert other drivers of road conditions, they are able to update the electronic signs across the state almost instantly.

It’s a lot of work, but because of partnerships with state patrols and other law enforcement, they are able to keep up with what is happening.

They are anticipating the busiest time of day between 3pm and 7pm.

They also say slow down and just give yourself plenty of time.
