Wisconsin DOT, Bucks’ Portis team up to tackle reckless driving

MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has announced that they are partnering with Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis in expanding the "Control Your Drive" campaign against reckless driving, with the aim being to reduce traffic deaths throughout the state.

"Reaching zero deaths on our roads needs to be everyone’s priority," said Wisconsin DOT Secretary Craig Thompson in a Friday, March 15 press release.

DOT data from 2023 shows that reckless driving contributed to over a quarter of traffic fatalities in the state, with over 1,266 speeding citations for speeds exceeding 100 mph being issued by the state patrol.

Thompson stressed the importance of community action, saying, "We all deserve to feel safe. Slow down, drive safely and encourage everyone to do the same."

Portis discussed the importance of using his platform for positive impact, saying that he can " ... help motivate drivers to not only drive safe for themselves, but for the others on the road as well."

The campaign is featured in Bucks games and online, with the Wisconsin DOT recommending simple steps drivers can follow to increase road safety: slow down, buckle up and avoid phone use while driving.
