Wisconsin Christmas tree sector shows growth despite recent adversities
MILWAUKEE (CBS 58) -- The Wisconsin Christmas Tree Producers Association has reported sustained growth in the state's Christmas tree market, overcoming recent drought conditions and the ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wisconsin, home to over 850 Christmas tree farms, is ranked fifth in the nation for the number of trees harvested annually. The state expects to harvest over 700,000 evergreens in 2023.
Greg Hann, Media Director of the association and owner of Hann's Christmas Farm in Oregon, noted in a press release issued on Tuesday, Nov. 21 that the market has remained stable due to adaptive farming practices.
Hann that the older trees, typically used for Christmas, have shown resilience to drought, attributing that to the industry's shift towards advanced irrigation methods. He also highlighted the economic impact of the industry, noting its role in providing seasonal jobs and supporting the state's economy.
Another cited advantage of a thriving natural tree market is on the environmental front, as real Christmas trees are known for their carbon dioxide absorption and ability to provide wildlife habitats. Post-holiday, these trees are often recycled for various environmental uses.
